The 2010 MidAmerica GIS Symposium will offer a series of short courses to enhance our concurrent sessions. These courses give you a chance to receive some in-depth training that you can immediately use! There are 25 distinct course offerings from Sunday through Thursday of the Symposium (April 18 - 22). These short courses provide opportunities for beginners and advanced professionals in a variety of topics in both computer lab and classroom settings. These include:

  • Intro to GIS, ModelBuilder, Geodatabases, Python;
  • ArcGIS Server API's, Web 2.0, Web Design;
  • Emergency Response, Remote Sensing, Cartography, LiDAR;
  • Map Book, The National Grid, GIS for Rural Communities, Mobile GIS;
  • AND MANY MORE

Short courses range from ½-day to full-day instruction. Prices are as follows:

MAGIC Draws Unexpected Participants from Unexplored Places - Kansas City, MO

Directions Magazine http://www.directionsmag.com has invited MAGIC to publish regularly in its online magazine.  The first article in our upcoming series highlights the educational events sponsored by MAGIC in 2009.

The article (#2) provides information about four workshops sponsored by MAGIC:

*Emergency Response with GIS Workshop - University City, Mo.

*MAGIC State Clearinghouse Retreat - Lincoln, Ne.

YOUR INPUT IS REQUESTED!
 
Several individuals in the midwest/great plains region (including one from Nebraska) have been nominated for recognition awards by the MidAmerica GIS Consortium (MAGIC).   To help in the final selection of those to receive awards and be recognized, the MAGIC Steering Committee has asked for recommendations from caucuses in each MAGIC state (including Nebraska). 
 
Background information on the awards, the nominees, and a "ballot" is available at:  http://nitc.nebraska.gov/gisc/news/MAGIC/Awards2010.html  Please use this information to provide us with your input on recommendations which the Nebraska caucus might make on MAGIC award nominations.   Deadline for submission of your input is Friday, February 5, 2010.

Please consider nominating a worthy individual or organization for a 2010 MAGIC Consortium Award in the GIS Service, GIS Coordination or GIS Innovation arenas.

Do you really think our Library's will want them? I am not so sure.
 
Because technology moves so fast it seems to me that these magazines are only useful in a 'research' capacity to review what once was the standard at the time.

Hello everyone!  I hope you are having a great Holiday Season.  The
deadline for submission of abstracts to the 2010 MAGIC Symposium

extended until _Jan 1, 2010_.  To submit your abstract, please do so
online at: http://www.magicgis.org/magic/symposiums/2010/abstract.cfm  
The 2010 MAGIC Symposium will be held at the Westin Crown Center in
Kansas City, Missouri on April 18-22, 2010.  The Symposium will feature
keynote speakers Jack Dangermond (ESRI President), Michael Jones (Google
Chief Technology Advocate), and Adena Schutzberg (Executive Director of
Directions Magazine).

 

Papers for the MAGIC Symposium will be organized into the following areas:

·         Safe and Healthy: Using GIS in the public safety and health
industries

·         Public Face of GIS: Moving GIS to the web and out to the
public for mass consumption

·         Professional Development: Becoming a better GIS professional

·         Smart Growth: Managing the growth of communities with GIS

·         Saving Time and Money: Using GIS to become more efficient in
what we do

·         Imagery and Remote Sensing

 

A few key things to keep in mind when submitting an abstract:

·         Presentations should consist of the following: a) technical
issues, b) applications, c) techniques, or d) policies and issues. All
presentations should be educational, informational, professional and
directly related to GIS.

·         Presentations that market specific products or services will
not be accepted. MAGIC is offering Tool Time sessions for vendors who
wish to attract a focused audience.

·         Vendors are encouraged to actively include their clients in
their presentations.

·         Vendors who are selected to present must be a registered
exhibitor <http://www.magicgis.org/exhibitors>.

·         *All speakers* are required to register and pay registration
fees for the 2010 MAGIC Symposium.
